Can changing the mattress have an effect on the spinal muscle activity and sleeping efficiency in people with chronic neck and back pain? A pilot study

Jun 01, 2021

Chronic neck pain and low back pain are the most prevalent musculoskeletal complaints that affect people all around the world. This study examined how spinal muscle activity is affected by sleeping on a specially designed mattress.

Each participant was assessed in their spinal muscle activity when they slept on an ordinary standard mattress, and then on a specially designed mattress (Point-to-Point®, DPMTM).  Participants were given the Point-to-Point® mattress to take home for a two-weeks’ trial period. They were also given a Fitbit BlazeTM to record sleep efficiency data each night during the mattress trial.

The results showed that the spinal muscle activity was reduced in both the neck and back regions, after the two-week mattress trial period. Improved Sleep Efficiency index was also observed from the Fitbit Blaze data. The participants also reported reduction of subjective pain scores of about 20% after the mattress trial.

Conclusion: The present study explored the effects of a specially designed mattress on the spinal muscle activity and sleep quality in people with chronic neck and back pain.

Using DPMTM Point-To-Point® Relief System, the mattress has shown to reduce the chronic neck and back pain and improve sleep quality. DPM mattress can be precisely configured according to scientific data, including your height, weight and sleeping habits. Designed to fit the contours of your body, the system relieves pressure on your shoulders and hips, and supports your lower back for total comfort.
